How Dangerous and Likely is Colorectal Cancer?

Colorectal cancer is the most common cancer in Singapore, being #1 among men and #2 among women, second only to breast cancer.

However, despite being a very common cancer, it is also one of the most preventable ones: colon cancer develops from polyps in the colon, which are easily discoverable via a colonoscopy and usually easily removed on the spot.

What are the Signs of Colon Cancer I Can Watch Out for?

Did you know? You shouldn’t wait until you get symptoms before getting screened.

A big part of why colon cancer is still so prevalent is because it typically does not display any symptoms until the later stages. This is why regular and timely screenings (colonoscopies) are so important.

A persistent change in bowel habits and the nature of the stool

Blood in stool or bleeding from the rectum

Sustained abdominal discomfort

Unexplained weight loss and fatigue

Should you experience these symptoms, a detailed check-up by a colorectal cancer doctor is highly recommended to determine the cause and allow for early intervention.

Is a Colonoscopy the Best Screening Method for Colon Cancer?

Yes, it is the most definitive, convenient and accurate method.

While there are other methods, a colonoscopy is the only one that is painless (performed under sedation), provides real-time visualisation throughout the colon, and allows polyps to be removed on the spot.

When Should I Get a Colonoscopy?

In individuals who do not have other risk factors for colon cancer apart from age, regular screenings every 10 years after the age of 50 is recommended.

In individuals with other risk factors, such as a family or personal history with colon cancer and/or polyps, they will be required to start screening earlier and more frequently.

Colorectal Practice provides accurate assessments and comprehensive management for polyps and colon cancer conveniently under one roof.
